From that song: “Somewhere over the rainbow, skies are blue, and the dreams that you dare to dream really do come true.”
Where is Over the Rainbow? Can it be more than a beautiful song? What encompasses your “over the rainbow?” It could be blue skies, but your “rainbow” could also be a workplace or community in energetic harmony, a mountain stream or a city park, great time with family, or a great workout, a perfectly run event, or fun, or balance, or all of the above.
How can you move toward that? How about knowing and understanding your values, and practicing being in sync with your values?
Values are what you really care about. The values you live by define who you are.
Coaches ask you to know and understand your values. They ask you to practice being in tune with them as a way to be fulfilled, to live according to what you value most. So that you can move toward your “over the rainbow.”
How do you start? I ask clients to rate their top values from a list of 42 values (trust, fun, balance, accomplishment, etc) . As a further exercise, I ask clients to do statements on what they care about in terms of career, relationships, fun, location etc. We do a fun exercise that illustrates how values are exhibited in your life.
So what? What you put on that list is not as important as what you what you practice, what values you truly honor and live in everyday life. That’s who you are being. How can you honor your values more? What changes can you make?
That’s your homework. Become aware of your values and what you care about, and notice how you are living in tune with that. Go ahead– make a change to move toward your rainbow.
Over the Rainbow is number one of the “Songs of the Century” list compiled by the Recording Industry Association of America and the National Endowment for the Arts.
Written by Harold Arlen
Sung by Judy Garland, Israel Kamakawiwo’ole, Leon Russell, Martina McBride, Natalie Cole, Sakis Rouvas, Jewel and Tony Bennett (among others)
Somewhere over the rainbow
way up high
there’s a land that I heard of
once in a lullaby
Somewhere over the rainbow
skies are blue
and the dreams that you dare to dream
really do come true
Some day I’ll wish upon a star
and wake up where the clouds are far behind me
where troubles melt like lemon drops
away above the chimney tops
that’s where you’ll find me
Somewhere over the rainbow
bluebirds fly
birds fly over the rainbow
why,then,oh why can’t I?
Somewhere over the rainbow
skies are blue
and the dreams that you dare to dream
really do come true
